1. What is a mailing list?

The mailing lists is simply a way of staying in touch with a number of people by e-mail regarding a particular topic or interest area.

2. How does a mailing list work?

The mailing list handles sending out e-mails to all the members of the list without having to worry about e-mail servers which block e-mail sent to too many people at a time. The mailing list since the each member of the list individually.

3. Why should I be a member of the mailing list?

The biggest advantage of being a member of a mailing list is that you control whether you are subscribed or unsubscribed. The other advantage is that you can request to receive all communication with the mailing list in the Digest format. So, instead of receiving each and every e-mail every time it is sent you will receive a digest entry of all the communication only once a day or less frequently.

4. How do I subscribe to one of the mailing lists?

Go to the following link where you will be presented with a list of the mailing lists.

You can click on the list you wish to join from the list on the left hand side. Or click on the link below for the list you wish to join. Then all you'll have to do is follow the on-screen instructions to join the list.

5. What happens after I sign up?

Depending upon the list settings you should get an e-mail sent to the e-mail address you entered and contained in that e-mail will be a confirmation link. Follow the instructions in the e-mail or click on the confirmation link to confirm you signed up for this list. You will also receive instructions on how to use the list in that email.

With some of the lists an administrator or moderator will have to confirm or deny your subscription. The reason for this is that some of the lists are closed and are for specific purposes only and as a result cannot be opened to the general membership. Most closed lists are designed for a specific purpose or task and as a result must have a limited membership.

6. How do I send to the list?

To send to the list all that is required is sending an e-mail to the e-mail address listed in your confirmation e-mail you received when you signed up.

7. How long will it take for my e-mail to be sent to everyone on the list?

The sending out of e-mails to everyone on the list is immediate. There may be some restrictions such as a closed list which is for information purposes only and usually only one person can send out e-mails to the entire list. Or the list may be a moderated list which means that an administrator or moderator has to approve your communication first.

8. How do I unsubscribe from the list?

To unsubscribe from a list you can do it two ways. The first one is to send an e-mail to that list from your regular e-mail address with unsubscribe in the subject line. The second way is to pick your list from the ones listed below, this will take you to the list management page, and on this page you can unsubscribe.

For some of the lists an administrator or moderator will have to approve your unsubscribe request. The only reason for this, and it is usually only put in place for closed lists, is to ensure the administrator or moderator of that list is aware of who has unsubscribed. There are many reasons for this but those are best discussed with the administrator or moderator.

9. What is a digest?

A digest is simply a summary of all the e-mails and communications sent to the list. A digest allows you to review all of the communication with the list online by everyone. It is a good way to get an overview of all the communication. It is also a way, if you're not certain if you received a particular communication, to review all of the communications sent to that list.

10. I have been banned from a list - why?

There are filters in place to ensure that all communication to the list by members does not contain language which has been deemed not suitable for the list. This can happen in error as filtering is not 100% perfect. If this does happen to you please send an email to webmaster@cabua.ca

11. I am a moderator for a list how do I access the webpage to perform the moderator function?

Click on the mailing list below for which you are moderator and you will be taken to the correct page where you can enter your moderator password.

12. How do I address a concern which is not listed here?

Please send an e-mail to webmaster@cabua.ca which outlines your concerns.
